In an ancient age, the Bergakungen, rock-loving Tomte, created the Wazzles from other people - both tomte and human - whom they captured and enslaved.
Over many generations toiling in deep caverns mining for magic crystals, their slaves changed becoming specialized but hideous versions of their former selves, the Wazzles (a race not too different from goblins and orcs). Their skin became grey or brown sometimes with spots, some grew fur for warmth, others grew claws, some groups hands turning into shovels and picks from generations of performing the same action again and again against magical materials that changed them more quickly than typical genetics would — like radiation, long exposure to magical crystals alters those around it.

They can be tall; they can be short; they can be hairy or covered in warts.
Wazzles come in all shapes and sizes.

The Wazzles were enslaved for thousands of years, until final they revolted and burned the Bergakungen cities, tore down the mountains upon their heads, and fled to every corner of the world through tunnels and over land - only traveling at night because the sun burns them as they were created in the dark, from the dark.
Excerpt:
And the Darkness became their Goddess. Out of their hated they found her. Goddess of Night, Zulmat. It was she who led them to rebel. She gave them hope. She gave them purpose.
Though not every Wazzle clan still worships Zulmat alone, she is an important part of their ever growing pantheon of ancestors. She is the mother of their freedom, and patroness to all.
This is why eventually, she will bring them together to create the other fist of her army to stop Chaos’ forces. Herrodan’s Golden legion, the Quorongilik, and the Wazzles together will be unstoppable.
Wazzles can be found on all Three Continents, usually in caves, though some have adapted to live above ground in deep forests and jungles. They are quicker to adapt to new circumstances than any other known race.
In more recent years, many wazzles have been recaptured and enslaved by ill-meaning tomte. One of these such wazzles, a Mr. Ogo Pogo, was able to escape in a riot he helped start, carrying away a gunpowder weapon, alchemical recipes, and the schematics for a number of complex gadgets of his tomte master. He now distributes this knowledge throughout the land while sailing in the crew of Captain Qrrul.
